Ditch the "All or Nothing" Mentality

This past weekend, Patrick and I attended the annual Two Brain Business Summit in Chicago.  This is the biggest gym conference in the world where some of the most successful small-gym owners share best practices.  We met lots of other gym owners just like us where we shared ideas, experiences, and struggles. I ended the weekend feeling inspired, motivated, and excited to implement all this wonderful new knowledge into Whitewater CrossFit.

I also ended the weekend feeling like a total BLOB; long travel days to and from, eating out every meal, more adult beverages than I’d like to admit, minimal exercise, and a super funky sleep schedule (don’t check my whoop recovery lol).  By Monday I was feeling like a solid 3 out of 10.  Woof.

But I am writing this blog to remind you that a shitty 3-4 days is not the end of the world. It’s LIFE.  And it’s not worth beating yourself up about it. That said,  it’s also NOT an excuse to continue to make poor health decisions.

Too often when we have a few bad days we end up sabotaging the rest of the week. “I’ll get back on track next week.”  The next week starts and we still haven’t gotten back to our healthy routine. “I’ll start fresh next month.”  We keep kicking the can farther and farther down the road.  And the longer we wait to get back on track, the harder it is to get back on track.

When I got home Monday, I signed my butt up for the 4pm class.  Did I feel like exercising? Heck. No.  But I know that waiting is a trap.  So, I treated my workout as a “check the box”  kind of day, accepted that it would not be my best workout, and moved my body for an hour. When I got home, we cooked and ate a whole foods meal.  By bedtime, I felt so much better and excited to keep the ball rolling the next day.

So remember: It’s not about being perfect all of the time. Rather it’s about making the best/healthiest decisions most of the time and getting back on track as soon as possible.  There will always be something threatening to derail your goals.  One less-than-perfect meal, missed workout, or off-track weekend does not erase all of your progress. What matters most is what you do next. Focus on consistency over perfection. That is what creates long-term success.

See you in the gym!
