It’s common knowledge that exercise improves our physical health. But research also shows that exercise is beneficial for our mental health.
When we exercise, we naturally release endorphins (aka “feel-good” chemicals) which improve our sense of well-being. This is why we feel better, lighter, happier, and more motivated after a good workout. Exercise is also a highly effective treatment for depression, often providing benefits comparable to antidepressants. So, just like a healthy diet is medicine for the body, exercise can be medicine for the mind.
I personally do not suffer from depression (well, maybe some seasonal…). But I know that if I go more than a few days without significant movement, I feel like crap and am a miserable person to be around. Negative thoughts start creeping in, I’m convinced all of my clothes look terrible, and my confidence goes way, way down. I also become anti-social and unmotivated to do even the simplest of tasks.
But all it takes in one workout and it's like someone flipped a switch. That mental rain cloud evaporates. I suddenly walk a little taller. I feel much more outgoing. I am proud of what I see in the mirror. And I am MUCH more pleasant to be around.
Do you know what else reduces feelings of depression and boosts our feelings of self-worth? Being part of a supportive community! Which means exercising in a group environment, where we have a shared sense of purpose and belonging, is a double whammy when it comes to improving our mental health. Right on!
So if you’re feeling down in the dumps, MOVE! And if you want to feel your best, do it with some friends. I promise you will feel better afterwards.
