A common question that comes up when an athlete starts their CrossFit journey is “what shoes should I wear?”
If all we did in class was run, then a running specific shoe would be appropriate. If all we did in class was lift, then lifters would be best. But CrossFit includes many methodologies of fitness. It doesn’t have a “specialty” and neither should your footwear.
When deciding on a shoe, your best bet is a cross-trainer- something that you can do a little bit of everything in. It should allow you to run, lift, step, jump, climb, etc. relatively well, but perhaps isn’t ~*aMaZiNg*~ in any one category.
Some popular CrossFit shoes are Nike Metcons, Reebok Nanos (I like these and always find some on sale), NOBULL, TYR, and R.A.D.. I typically look for a shoe that has zero drop (flatter, more barefoot feel), a wide toe box (your toes should never feel crammed together), and can stand up to things like rope climbs, burpees, and running. I know those Hokas are comfy, but for CrossFit, it shouldn't feel like you're standing on gummy bears.
Unless the workout calls for a high volume of running or mostly weightlifting, stick to your cross-trainer. Just like we want to become well-rounded athletes, we need a well-rounded shoe!
